I’ve lived in Saranda most of my life, and I’ve seen the town change in incredible ways. But one thing hasn’t changed — the way kids grow up here. It’s slower. It’s sunnier. And frankly, it’s better. When I think of childhood here, I think of freedom. Kids still ride their bikes in the neighborhood without parents panicking. They swim in the sea without chlorine stinging their eyes. And somehow, they’re not glued to screens all day.

There’s a sense of trust in the community. In places like Ksamil, Borsh, and Lukova, it’s not unusual to leave your front door open while the neighbors’ kids pop in and out. That kind of village energy still exists, even though the region is growing fast.

Schools are nearby. The local kindergarten in Saranda is just a short walk from the promenade. And if you ask me, there’s something beautiful about picking up your child while smelling the sea breeze and stopping for an ice cream at Gelateria Vela on the way home.

Life Slows Down — In the Best Way

I met a French family last spring. They had been living in Lyon, running between work, traffic, and daycare schedules that felt more like military drills. The mother told me she barely saw her kids during the week.

When they visited Saranda “just to see,” they ended up staying all summer.

By September, they were looking for a beachfront property. They told me their kids seemed happier, healthier, and — this surprised them — more curious about the world around them.

There’s something about the rhythm of life here. Morning swims, afternoon naps, evening walks. Even dinner happens later and slower — a long meal on the balcony while the kids chase each other around the courtyard.
